A Brief Study of Victorian Periodicals
Welcome! The entries posted to this blog are written by graduate students at the University of St. Thomas, Minnesota who are engaged in the study of Victorian periodical journalism under the leadership of Dr. Alexis Easley. We seek to situate several well-known Victorian novels and the works of now-forgotten authors within their original periodical contexts, thereby contributing to the emerging criticism on nineteenth-century periodicals and media in general.
We have limited our research to the latter half of the nineteenth century, focusing on the period of prolific growth in the periodical industry of Britain at the time. Some of the literary figures we are reviewing include:
- Charles Dickens
- George Eliot
- Christina Rossetti
- Mary Elizabeth Braddon
- Wilkie Collins
- Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu
- L.T. Meade
- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
- Thomas Hardy
- H.G. Wells
This list is by no means exhaustive, but should give you a sense of where we are headed.
